Practical training

The tertial "clinical microbiology and infectiology" within the practical training is offered jointly by the Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology at the University of Würzburg and the Department of Tropical Medicine at the Mission Medical Clinic Würzburg. During the two rotations at these departments, you will learn how to diagnose and treat communicable diseases, especially bacterial and parasitic infections.
At the Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology, you will diagnose bacteria, fungi and parasites yourself from patient materials and use modern biochemical and molecular biological methods for pathogen identification and resistance determination. During clinical rounds and consultations, you will also learn how the findings are classified in the clinic and whether the pathogens detected are relevant to the patient's illness and thus require treatment.
Due to increasingly resistant pathogens, increasing cost pressure and ever older patients, hospital hygiene plays an important role. As part of your rotation in microbiology, you will also have the opportunity to gain insight into the prevention of nosocomial infections and resistance monitoring.
