Institut für Hygiene und Mikrobiologie

    Doctoral Researchers (PhD, f/m/d)

The Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology of the University of Würzburg combines clinical diagnostics and state of the art research in infectious diseases with services in patient care. The Chair for Medical Microbiology and Mycology is among the internationally leading centers for the diagnosis of invasive fungal infections. Our research focusses on the epidemiology, diagnosis and infection biology of invasive fungal pathogens. To strengthen our team, we invite talented and motivated candidates to apply for positions as:

    Doctoral Researchers (PhD, f/m/d)

    (TVL-E13, 50-65%)

The positions are available immediately, and the successful candidates will perform cutting-edge basic and applied research in the area of human fungal infections, using microbiology and immunology techniques. Work will be performed in an experienced team of basic scientists and physician scientists in an internationally visible research group in medical mycology. The successful candidates will be aided by experienced postdoctoral researchers in the lab and work together with fellow PhD and MD students.

    Your research tasks may include:

    • Whole blood cell assays and immune cell isolation
    • Analysis of host-pathogen interactions between fungal pathogens and immune cells
    • Fungal cell biology, cell wall biogenesis and stress signaling
    • Immune evasion strategies of fungal pathogens
    • Characterization of the mode of action of antifungal drugs
    • Identification and characterization of genetic risk factors for fungal infections
    • Live cell imaging of host-pathogen interactions
    • RNA isolation and bioinformatics analysis

    Your profile

    • Interest in infection biology, cell biology, immunology and/or molecular biology
    • MSc (or equivalent) in natural sciences (Biology, Biochemistry or related fields) - candidates in the final stages of obtaining their degree are eligible to apply
    • Background in microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology or related fields
    • Experience in cell culture methodologies, molecular biology/genetics, immune cell isolation and/or flow cytometry is advantageous
