New diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for treatment of fungal keratitis using a 3D cornea model
The Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology of the University of Würzburg combines clinical diagnostics and state of the art research in infectious diseases with services in patient care. The Chair for Medical Microbiology and Mycology is among the internationally leading centers for the diagnosis of invasive fungal infections. Doctoral Researchers (PhD, f/m/d)
The successful candidate will work on new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for treatment of fungal keratitis using a 3D cornea model. Fungal keratitis is a devastating infection, which frequently results in corneal transplantation or loss of the eye. Within the PhD project, we aim to establish new models to study this disease and evaluate potential new treatment strategies. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Hospital Würzburg and the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Würzburg and is integrated into the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF).
Your research tasks may include
- Optimisation of an existing human 3D model (tissue engineering)
- Susceptibility testing of clinically relevant fungi
- In vitro simulation of fungal infections
- Confocal microscopy and life cell imaging
- Efficacy tests for fungicidal or protective effects of new substances
- RNA isolation and transcriptome analysis
- Interest in infection biology, cell biology, immunology and/or molecular biology
- MSc (or equivalent) in natural sciences (Biology, Biochemistry or related fields) - candidates in the final stages of obtaining their degree are eligible to apply
- Background in microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology or related fields
- Experience in cell culture methodologies, molecular biology/genetics, fluorescence/confocal microscopy, and immunology is advantageous
The position is available immediately and initially limited to 3 years. Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees).
