IHM co-organizes one-day EMGM meeting on invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroups W and Y

Several countries in Europe and elsewhere have reported an increase in the number of cases of invasive meningococcal disease caused by the meningococcal serogroups W and Y. As a response, the English authorities have initiated a vaccine campaign targeting adolescents. Thirty-four microbiologists and epidemiologists from 18 countries followed the invitation of the EMGM society  to participate in a one day meeting aiming at the discussion of recent epidemiological trends, research needs, and preventive measures.  The meeting was organized by Ulrich Vogel from the IHM and Ray Borrow from Health Protection England. The importance of genome sequencing to track relevant clones and to early anticipate expansion was highlighted. Disease characteristics and age distribution in various countries were analysed. The program is available at the society´s homepage.
